In an ideal orthogonal cutting experiment, the cutting speed V is 1 m/s, the rake angle of the tool α=5°, and the shear angle φ=45°. Assuming the perpendicular distance between two close shear planes PQ and RS is δ=25 μm, what is the value of shear strain rate (in s⁻¹) that the material undergoes at the shear zone?
- A1.84 × 10⁴
- 5.20 × 10⁴
- C0.71 × 10⁴
- D1.30 × 10⁴
Explanation
Shear velocity Vs=V·cosα/cos(φ−α)=1×cos5°/cos40°=0.9962/0.7660≈1.3005 m/s. Shear strain rate=Vs/δ=1.3005/(25×10⁻⁶)≈52020 s⁻¹≈5.20×10⁴ s⁻¹.
