Medium

The loading and unloading response of a metal is shown in a stress-strain figure: the loading curve reaches 200 MPa at strain 0.03, and unloading returns to zero stress at strain 0.01. The elastic and plastic strains corresponding to 200 MPa stress, respectively, are

  • A0.01 and 0.01
  • 0.02 and 0.01
  • C0.01 and 0.02
  • D0.02 and 0.02

Explanation

Total strain at 200 MPa is 0.03. On unloading, the permanent (plastic) strain remaining at zero stress is 0.01. The recovered (elastic) strain is the difference: 0.03-0.01=0.02.
