Shear stress distribution on the cross-section of the coil wire in a helical compression spring is shown as a straight-line antisymmetric distribution superposed with a uniform offset. This shear stress distribution represents
- Adirect shear stress in the coil wire cross-section
- Btorsional shear stress in the coil wire cross-section
- combined direct shear and torsional shear stress in the coil wire cross-section
- Dcombined direct shear and torsional shear stress along with the effect of stress concentration at the inside edge of the coil wire cross-section
Explanation
A simple superposition of a uniform direct-shear stress and a linearly-varying torsional-shear stress (without any curvature-induced stress concentration correction) produces exactly this straight-line, offset distribution — the Wahl-factor-corrected distribution (with stress concentration at the inner edge) would instead show a nonlinear skew toward the inside of the coil.
