Hard
In a turning process using orthogonal tool geometry, a chip length of 100 mm is obtained for an uncut chip length of 250 mm. The cutting conditions are: cutting speed = 30 m/min, rake angle = 20°. The shear plane angle is __________ degrees (round off to one decimal place).
23.5 °(± 1.5 accepted)
Explanation
By volume conservation, chip thickness ratio r = t0/tc = lc/l0 = 100/250 = 0.4. Shear angle: tanφ = r·cosα/(1−r·sinα) = 0.4×cos20°/(1−0.4×sin20°) = 0.3759/0.8632 ≈ 0.4354, so φ ≈ 23.5°.
