Hard

A beam is fixed at end A, carries a 50 kN point load 3 m from A, has an internal hinge 3 m further along (6 m from A), then a 10 kN/m uniformly distributed load over the next 4 m, ending at a roller support C (10 m from A). The magnitude of the reaction force at joint C of this hinge-beam is __________ kN (round off to 2 decimal places).

20 kN(± 0.1 accepted)

Explanation

An internal hinge transmits no moment, so the segment from the hinge (B) to the roller (C) can be analysed on its own as a simply-supported beam carrying only the 10 kN/m UDL over its 4 m span (the 50 kN load and the fixed support at A act entirely on the other side of the hinge). By symmetry of the UDL over this span, both end reactions of that sub-beam equal wL/2 = 10×4/2 = 20 kN, so the reaction at C is 20.00 kN.
