A rigid triangular body, PQR, with sides of equal length of 1 unit moves on a flat plane. At the instant shown, edge QR is parallel to the x-axis, and the body moves such that velocities of points P and R are VP and VR, in the x and y directions, respectively (VP horizontal at the apex P, VR vertical at the base corner R). The magnitude of the angular velocity of the body is
- 2VR
- B2VP
- CVR/√3
- DVP/√3
Explanation
Set Q=(0,0), R=(1,0), P=(0.5,√3/2). Since VP is horizontal, the instant centre lies on the vertical line x=0.5 through P; since VR is vertical, it lies on the horizontal line y=0 through R. So the instant centre is at (0.5,0), a distance 0.5 from R. Then ω=VR/(distance from IC to R)=VR/0.5=2VR.
