A frictionless gear train is shown in the figure. The leftmost 12-teeth gear is given a torque of 100 N-m. It meshes with a 48-teeth gear on the same shaft as another 12-teeth gear, which meshes with the output 60-teeth gear. The output torque from the 60-teeth gear on the right (in N-m) is
- A5
- B20
- C500
- 2000
Explanation
In an ideal (frictionless) gear train, power is conserved at each mesh, so torque ratio is the reciprocal of the speed ratio. Overall speed ratio (output/input) = (12/48)×(12/60) = 0.25×0.2 = 0.05. So torque ratio (output/input) = 1/0.05 = 20. Output torque = 100×20 = 2000 N·m.
