Hard
The true stress (σ) - true strain (ε) diagram of a strain hardening material shows loading up to point A (stress 500 MPa, strain 0.5), then elastic unloading up to point B (stress 100 MPa). Given Young's modulus E=200 GPa, the natural (true) strain at point B (εB) is _________ (correct to three decimal places).
0.498(± 0.001 accepted)
Explanation
Unloading from A to B is elastic, following slope E. Elastic strain recovered = Δσ/E = (500−100)/200,000 = 0.002. εB = εA − recovered strain = 0.5 − 0.002 = 0.498.
