A steel plate, connected to a fixed channel using three identical bolts A, B and C (equally spaced 50 mm apart, in a line), carries a load of 6 kN offset 250 mm from the centroidal bolt B. Considering the effect of direct load and moment, the magnitude of resultant shear force (in kN) on bolt C is
- A13
- B15
- 17
- D30
Explanation
Direct shear per bolt = 6/3 = 2 kN (downward, on each bolt). Moment about centroid B: M = 6×250 = 1500 kN·mm. Bolts A and C are each 50 mm from centroid B, so with Σr² = 50²+0²+50² = 5000 mm², the moment-induced shear on bolt C is M·rC/Σr² = 1500×50/5000 = 15 kN (vertical, adding to the direct shear on the bolt farthest in the load's rotational sense). Resultant on C = 2+15 = 17 kN.
