Bernoulli's Equation & Flow
GATE 2017
Medium
Consider a laminar flow at zero incidence over a flat plate. The shear stress at the wall is denoted by τw. The axial positions x₁ and x₂ on the plate are measured from the leading edge in the direction of flow. If x₂>x₁, then
- Aτw|x1 = τw|x2 = 0
- Bτw|x1 = τw|x2 ≠ 0
- τw|x1 > τw|x2
- Dτw|x1 < τw|x2
Explanation
For laminar flow over a flat plate (Blasius solution), the wall shear stress τw ∝ 1/√x — it decreases as the boundary layer develops and thickens downstream. Since x₂>x₁, τw at x₁ is larger than at x₂, i.e., τw|x1 > τw|x2.
