A motor driving a solid circular steel shaft transmits 40 kW of power at 500 rpm. If the diameter of the shaft is 40 mm, the maximum shear stress in the shaft is __________ MPa.
60.5 MPa(± 0.5 accepted)
Explanation
Torque T = P/ω = 40000/(2π×500/60) = 40000/52.36 ≈ 764.0 N·m. Max shear stress τ = 16T/(πd³) = 16×764.0/(π×0.04³) ≈ 60.8 MPa.
