Hard

Consider the schematic of a riveted lap joint subjected to tensile load F. Let d be the diameter of the rivets, and Sf be the maximum permissible tensile stress in the plates. What should be the minimum value for the thickness of the plates to guard against tensile failure of the plates? Assume the plates to be identical.

  • F / [Sf(W-2d)]
  • BF / [SfW]
  • CF / [Sf(W-d)]
  • D2F / [SfW]

Explanation

At the critical net section through both rivet holes (each removing diameter d from the plate width W), the tensile stress is F/[t(W-2d)]. Setting this to the permissible stress Sf and solving for minimum thickness t gives t = F/[Sf(W-2d)].
