A rigid link PQ is undergoing plane motion (VP and VQ are both non-zero). VQP is the relative velocity of point Q with respect to point P. Which one of the following is TRUE?

  • AVQP has components along and perpendicular to PQ
  • BVQP has only one component directed from P to Q
  • CVQP has only one component directed from Q to P
  • VQP has only one component perpendicular to PQ

Explanation

For a rigid link, the distance PQ cannot change, so the relative velocity of any point with respect to another point on the SAME rigid body has no component along the link — only a component perpendicular to it.
