Bernoulli's Equation & Flow
GATE 2016
Medium

A channel of width 450 mm (unit depth) branches into two sub-channels of width 300 mm and 200 mm. The volumetric flow rate in the main channel is 0.9 m³/s, and the velocity in the 200 mm sub-channel is 3 m/s. Assuming both inlet and outlet are at the same elevation, the velocity (in m/s) in the 300 mm sub-channel is __________.

1 m/s(± 0.05 accepted)

Explanation

By continuity (unit depth, so flow rate = width × velocity): 0.9 = 0.3·v + 0.2×3 → 0.9 = 0.3v + 0.6 → v = 1.0 m/s.
