A machine element XY, fixed at end X, is subjected to an axial load P, a transverse load F, and a twisting moment T at its free end Y. The most critical point from the strength point of view is
- Aa point on the circumference at location Y
- Ba point at the center at location Y
- a point on the circumference at location X
- Da point at the center at location X
Explanation
For a cantilever loaded only at the free end Y, the bending moment (and hence bending stress) grows from zero at Y to a maximum at the fixed end X, while torque and axial force stay constant along the length. So the fixed end X carries the largest combined stress. Within a cross-section, bending and torsional shear stresses are both maximum at the outer circumference (zero at the center), so the critical point is on the circumference at X.
