In an ultrasonic machining (USM) process, the material removal rate (MRR) is plotted as a function of the feed force of the USM tool. With increasing feed force, the MRR exhibits the following behavior:

  • Aincreases linearly
  • Bdecreases linearly
  • Cdoes not change
  • first increases and then decreases

Explanation

In USM, MRR rises with feed force up to an optimum value (as the tool-work gap narrows to the ideal abrasive-grain size), then falls beyond that point because excessive force chokes the abrasive slurry flow into the cutting zone.
