A slider-crank mechanism has crank radius 200 mm and connecting rod length 800 mm. The crank rotates at 600 rpm counterclockwise. In the configuration shown, the crank is perpendicular (90°) to the sliding direction, and a force of 5 kN acts on the slider. Neglecting inertia forces, the turning moment on the crank (in kN-m) is __________.

1 kN-m(± 0.1 accepted)

Explanation

At crank angle θ=90°, the exact slider velocity simplifies to v = rω (the second term of the standard slider velocity formula vanishes since cosθ=0). ω=600 rpm=62.83 rad/s, v=0.2×62.83=12.57 m/s. Neglecting inertia and friction, power balance gives T·ω = F·v, so T = F·r = 5000×0.2 = 1000 N-m = 1 kN-m.
