A fluid (Prandtl number Pr=1) at 500 K flows over a flat plate of 1.5 m length maintained at 300 K, at 10 m/s. With kinematic viscosity ν=30×10⁻⁶ m²/s, the thermal boundary layer thickness (in mm) at 0.5 m from the leading edge is __________.
6.075 mm(± 0.175 accepted)
Explanation
Since Pr=1, the thermal boundary layer thickness equals the velocity boundary layer thickness. Rex = Ux/ν = 10×0.5/30e-6 ≈ 166,667, √Rex ≈ 408.25. δ = 5x/√Rex = 5×0.5/408.25 ≈ 6.12 mm.
