Bernoulli's Equation & Flow
GATE 2016
Medium
Oil (kinematic viscosity ν=1.0×10⁻⁵ m²/s) flows through a 0.5 m diameter pipe at 10 m/s. Water (ν=0.89×10⁻⁶ m²/s) flows through a model pipe of diameter 20 mm. For dynamic similarity, the velocity of water (in m/s) is __________.
22.25 m/s(± 0.25 accepted)
Explanation
Matching Reynolds numbers: Re_oil = 10×0.5/1e-5 = 500,000. v_water = Re_oil × ν_water / D_water = 500,000 × 0.89e-6 / 0.02 ≈ 22.25 m/s.
