GATE 2015
Easy
For flow of viscous fluid over a flat plate, if the fluid temperature is the same as the plate temperature, the thermal boundary layer is
- Athinner than the velocity boundary layer
- Bthicker than the velocity boundary layer
- Cof the same thickness as the velocity boundary layer
- not formed at all
Explanation
A thermal boundary layer develops because of a temperature difference between the fluid and the plate driving heat transfer. If the fluid temperature equals the plate temperature, there is no driving temperature gradient, so no thermal boundary layer forms at all — even though the velocity boundary layer still exists due to viscous shear.
