During pure orthogonal turning operation of a hollow cylindrical pipe, it is found that the thickness of the chip produced is 0.5 mm. The feed given to the zero degree rake angle tool is 0.2 mm/rev. The shear strain produced during the operation is __________.

2.9(± 0.15 accepted)

Explanation

Chip thickness ratio r=t1/t2=0.2/0.5=0.4. With zero rake angle, tanφ=r=0.4, so φ≈21.80°. Shear strain γ=cotφ+tan(φ−α); with α=0, γ=cotφ+tanφ=(1/0.4)+0.4=2.5+0.4=2.9.
