GATE 2014
Easy
For a completely submerged body with centre of gravity 'G' and centre of buoyancy 'B', the condition of stability will be
- G is located below B
- BG is located above B
- CG and B are coincident
- Dindependent of the locations of G and B
Explanation
For a fully (not just partially) submerged body, the metacenter coincides with the centre of buoyancy B, so stability is determined directly by the relative position of G and B: if G is below B, any tilt creates a righting couple, making the body stable.
