Strength of Materials
Stress & Strain
GATE 2013
Easy
For a ductile material, toughness is a measure of
- Aresistance to scratching
- ability to absorb energy up to fracture
- Cability to absorb energy till elastic limit
- Dresistance to indentation
Explanation
Toughness is the total energy a material can absorb before fracturing — the area under the entire stress-strain curve up to the fracture point (not just up to the elastic limit, which instead defines resilience).
