GATE 2013

What will be the maximum sum of 44, 42, 40, ......?
- A502
- B504
- 506
- D500
Explanation
The series decreases by 2 each term: 44, 42, ..., 2, 0, -2, .... The running sum is maximized right before the terms turn negative (adding 0 doesn't change the sum, and adding any negative term only decreases it). Summing from 2 to 44 (22 terms, an AP with a=2, d=2): Sum = 22/2 x (2+44) = 11 x 46 = 506.
