Specific enthalpy and velocity of steam at inlet and exit of a steam turbine, running under steady state, are as given below: Inlet steam condition — specific enthalpy 3250 kJ/kg, velocity 180 m/s; Exit steam condition — specific enthalpy 2360 kJ/kg, velocity 5 m/s. The rate of heat loss from the turbine per kg of steam flow rate is 5 kW. Neglecting changes in potential energy of steam, the power developed in kW by the steam turbine per kg of steam flow rate, is

  • 901.2
  • B911.2
  • C17072.5
  • D17082.5

Explanation

SFEE per unit mass: q − w = Δh + ΔKE. Heat loss q=−5 kJ/kg. Δh=h2−h1=2360−3250=−890 kJ/kg. ΔKE=(V2²−V1²)/2=(5²−180²)/2=−16187.5 J/kg=−16.19 kJ/kg. So w = q − Δh − ΔKE = −5 −(−890) −(−16.19) = 901.2 kJ/kg.
