GATE 2013
Easy
In order to have maximum power from a Pelton turbine, the bucket speed must be
- Aequal to the jet speed.
- equal to half of the jet speed.
- Cequal to twice the jet speed.
- Dindependent of the jet speed.
Explanation
Power delivered to a Pelton bucket P=ρQ(V−U)(1+k cosβ)U, a function of bucket speed U that is maximized when dP/dU=0, giving U=V/2 — the bucket speed must equal half the jet speed.
