Governors & Flywheels
GATE 2012
Easy
A circular solid disc of uniform thickness 20 mm, radius 200 mm and mass 20 kg, is used as a flywheel. If it rotates at 600 rpm, the kinetic energy of the flywheel, in Joules is
- A395
- 790
- C1580
- D3160
Explanation
Mass moment of inertia of a solid disc about its axis: I=½mr²=0.5×20×0.2²=0.4 kg·m². Angular velocity ω=600×2π/60=62.83 rad/s. KE=½Iω²=0.5×0.4×62.83²≈790 J.
