Strength of Materials
Bending of Beams
GATE 2011
Medium
A simply supported beam PQ of span 1 m is loaded by a moment of 1 kN-m at the mid-span of the beam. The reaction forces RP and RQ at supports P and Q respectively are
- 1 kN downward, 1 kN upward
- B0.5 kN upward, 0.5 kN downward
- C0.5 kN downward, 0.5 kN upward
- D1 kN upward, 1 kN upward
Explanation
With no net applied force (only a pure moment), ΣFy=0 requires RP=-RQ (equal and opposite). Taking moments about Q: RQ×1m - 1kN·m = 0 (the applied 1kN-m moment must be balanced by the reaction couple) ⟹ RQ=1kN upward, RP=1kN downward.
