Consider the following two processes: (a) A heat source at 1200K loses 2500kJ of heat to a sink at 800K. (b) A heat source at 800K loses 2000kJ of heat to a sink at 500K. Which of the following statements is true?

  • AProcess I is more irreversible than Process II
  • Process II is more irreversible than Process I
  • CIrreversibility associated in both the processes are equal
  • DBoth the processes are reversible

Explanation

Entropy generated = Q/Tsink - Q/Tsource for each process. Process I: 2500/800-2500/1200≈1.042 kJ/K. Process II: 2000/500-2000/800=1.5 kJ/K. Since more entropy is generated in Process II, it is more irreversible.
