Thermodynamics
Entropy & Second Law
GATE 2009
Medium
If a closed system is undergoing an irreversible process, the entropy of the system
- Amust increase
- Balways remains constant
- Cmust decrease
- can increase, decrease or remain constant
Explanation
Entropy is a state property of the SYSTEM alone (not the universe). Even in an irreversible process, the system's own entropy change depends on the heat actually transferred and its direction; it is only the TOTAL entropy of system+surroundings that must increase. The system's own entropy can increase, decrease, or stay the same depending on the heat interaction.
