Machine Design
Design Against Static Load
GATE 2009
Medium
A solid circular shaft of diameter d is subjected to a combined bending moment M and torque T. The material property to be used for designing the shaft using the relation (16/πd³)√(M²+T²) is
- Aultimate tensile strength (Su)
- Btensile yield strength (Sy)
- torsional yield strength (Ssy)
- Dendurance strength (Se)
Explanation
This is the maximum-shear-stress-theory shaft design equation, equating the computed equivalent shear stress τ=(16/πd³)√(M²+T²) against an allowable shear stress derived from the material's SHEAR (torsional) yield strength, Ssy.
