Bernoulli's Equation & Flow
GATE 2009
Medium
Water at 25°C is flowing through a 1.0 km long G.I. pipe of 200 mm diameter at the rate of 0.07 m³/s. If the value of Darcy friction factor for this pipe is 0.02 and density of water is 1000 kg/m³, the pumping power (in kW) required to maintain the flow is
- A1.8
- 17.4
- C20.5
- D41.0
Explanation
V=Q/A=0.07/[(π/4)(0.2)²]≈2.228 m/s. hf=f(L/D)(V²/2g)=0.02(1000/0.2)(2.228²/19.62)≈25.3 m. Power=ρgQh=1000×9.81×0.07×25.3≈17.4 kW.
