Metal Casting
GATE 2008
Medium

While cooling, a cubical casting of side 40 mm undergoes 3%, 4% and 5% volume shrinkage during the liquid state, phase transition (solidification), and solid state, respectively. The volume of metal that must be compensated from the riser is

  • A2%
  • 7%
  • C8%
  • D9%

Explanation

Only liquid-state and solidification (phase-transition) shrinkage can be fed by the riser, since the casting is still liquid or freezing at that point; solid-state shrinkage occurs after the casting has fully solidified and the riser's feed path is already closed off. So only 3%+4%=7% needs riser compensation.
