Machine Design
Design Against Static Load
GATE 2008
Medium
For the same eccentrically loaded bracket (bolts P, Q; primary shear 2 kN/bolt; secondary shear 20 kN/bolt, M12 bolts), the resultant shear stress on bolt P is closest to
- A132 MPa
- 159 MPa
- C178 MPa
- D195 MPa
Explanation
At bolt P the primary and secondary shear are collinear (both vertical, since the bolts lie on the same horizontal line as the load's eccentricity) and act in opposing senses, giving a net resultant of 20-2=18 kN. M12 bolt area (nominal, 12mm dia)=π/4×12²≈113.1 mm². Stress=18000/113.1≈159 MPa.
