Let the size of congestion window of a TCP connection be 32 KB when a timeout occurs. The round trip time of the connection is 100 msec and the maximum segment size used is 2 KB. The time taken (in msec) by the TCP connection to get back to 32 KB congestion window is

1100(± 200 accepted)

Explanation

After a timeout, ssthresh is set to half the previous cwnd = 16KB, and cwnd resets to 1 MSS = 2KB. Slow start doubles cwnd each RTT: 2→4→8→16 KB (3 RTTs to reach ssthresh=16KB). Then congestion avoidance increases cwnd by 1 MSS (2KB) per RTT: 16→18→20→...→32 KB needs (32−16)/2=8 more RTTs. Total = 3+8 = 11 RTTs × 100ms = 1100 ms.
