Hard

An irreversible gas-phase reaction 2P→4Q+R is conducted in an isothermal, isobaric batch reactor (ideal gas). The feed is an equimolar mixture of reactant P and an inert gas. After complete conversion of P, the fractional change in volume is (round off to 2 decimal places)

0.75(± 0.02 accepted)

Explanation

Per mole of P (dividing the equation by 2): P→2Q+0.5R, so Δn per mole P reacted = (2+0.5)−1=1.5=δ. With yP0=0.5 (equimolar feed), εP=yP0·δ=0.5×1.5=0.75. At complete conversion, V/V0=1+εP=1.75, i.e. a 0.75 (75%) fractional increase.
