Hard

A feed stream of pure L flows into a reactor with a recycle stream, where L is partly converted to M (product stream L+M). The recycle stream's mass flow is 20% of the product stream's. Overall conversion of L (mass basis) is 30%. The one-pass conversion of L through the reactor (mass basis) is

  • A34.2%
  • B30%
  • 26.3%
  • D23.8%

Explanation

Let fresh feed F=1 (mass). Product Pr=F=1 (mass conserved). Product composition: L=0.7, M=0.3 (30% overall conversion). Recycle=0.2×Pr=0.2, with same composition (L=0.14, M=0.06). Reactor inlet L=1(fresh)+0.14(recycle)=1.14. Reactor outlet L (=effluent before split, same composition ratio scaled to 1.2 total mass)=0.7×1.2=0.84. One-pass conversion=(1.14−0.84)/1.14=0.263=26.3%.
