Fluid Mechanics
Bernoulli's Equation
GATE 2020
Easy
Incompressible flow of a constant-property fluid over a smooth, thin, wide flat plate has constant free-stream velocity parallel to the plate. The Reynolds number at 2.0 m from the leading edge is 8000. The flow within the boundary layer at 1.0 m from the leading edge is
- laminar
- Bturbulent
- Ctransitioning from laminar to turbulent
- Dinviscid
Explanation
Re_x scales linearly with x. At x=1.0m, Re_x=8000/2=4000, far below the typical flat-plate transition Reynolds number of ~5×10⁵ — the flow is still laminar.
