Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium
GATE 2019
Medium
For a binary system, molar volume v=30xA+20xB+xAxB(15xA−7xB) m³/mol. The volume change of mixing Δvmix (m³/mol) at xA=0.5 is (rounded off to one decimal place)
1 m^3/mol(± 0.1 accepted)
Explanation
At xA=0.5: v=30(0.5)+20(0.5)+0.25(15×0.5−7×0.5)=25+0.25×4=26. Pure-component volumes: vA(xA=1)=30, vB(xB=1)=20. Ideal (linear) volume at xA=0.5: 0.5×30+0.5×20=25. Δvmix=26−25=1.0.
