Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium
GATE 2019
Easy

A sealed rigid bottle contains CO2 and H2O at 10 bar and ambient temperature. The gas phase is pure CO2 (ideal gas). The liquid phase is an ideal solution of dissolved CO2 in H2O. The Henry's constant is HCO2=1000 bar. The equilibrium mole fraction of CO2 dissolved in H2O is (rounded off to three decimal places)

0.01(± 0.001 accepted)

Explanation

Henry's law: p_CO2=H·x_CO2. Since the gas phase is pure CO2, p_CO2=10bar. x_CO2=10/1000=0.01.
