Hard
CO+H2S⇌COS+H2 at 800K, 2 bar, Δg°rxn=22972.3 J/mol, R=8.314 J/mol·K. Initially 4 mol H2S and 1 mol CO are present (ideal gases). The extent of reaction (mol) at equilibrium is (rounded off to two decimal places)
0.29 mol(± 0.02 accepted)
Explanation
K=exp(−22972.3/(8.314×800))=exp(−3.4538)=0.0316. Since Δn=0 for this reaction, K=ξ²/[(1−ξ)(4−ξ)] (mole-fraction basis, total moles cancel). Solving 0.9684ξ²+0.1582ξ−0.1266=0 gives ξ≈0.289.
