Hard

Elementary irreversible parallel reactions 2A→D (k1=0.2 L/mol·min) and 2A→U (k2=0.3 L/mol·min) occur in a non-ideal isothermal reactor. The measured tracer C(t) rises linearly from 0 to 5 g/m³ over t=0 to 1min, then falls linearly to 0 at t=6min. Pure A is fed at CA0=2 mol/L. Using the segregated model, the percentage conversion is (rounded off to nearest integer)

65 %(± 2 accepted)

Explanation

Batch second-order decay: CA(t)/CA0=1/(1+(k1+k2)CA0t)=1/(1+t) (since (k1+k2)CA0=1.0/min). Normalizing the triangular C(t) by its area (=15) gives E(t)=t/3 for 0≤t≤1 and (6−t)/15 for 1≤t≤6. X̄=1−∫E(t)/(1+t)dt=1−(0.1023+0.2513)=1−0.3536=0.646≈65%.
