Medium

A 20cm diameter cylindrical nuclear fuel pellet (density 6000 kg/m³, k=300 W/m·K) generates heat uniformly at 10^4 W/kg. The pellet wall temperature is held at 300°C. The maximum temperature (°C) in the pellet at steady state is (rounded off to nearest integer)

800 °C(± 1 accepted)

Explanation

For a solid cylinder with uniform generation, Tmax−Ts=ġR²/(4k). ġ=10⁴×6000=6×10⁷ W/m³, R=0.1m. Tmax−300=6e7×0.01/(4×300)=500. Tmax=800°C.
