Hard

Hydrogenation of benzene uses Ni catalyst (density 8910 kg/m³) as a non-porous hollow cylinder (OD 25mm, ID 20mm, length 25mm), reacting on all surfaces. Observed rate is 0.39 mol/(m² catalyst surface)/min. The rate in mol/(kg catalyst)/min is (rounded off to three decimal places)

0.0385 mol/kg/min(± 0.004 accepted)

Explanation

Ro=0.0125m, Ri=0.010m, L=0.025m. Surface area=outer curved(2πRoL=0.001964)+inner curved(2πRiL=0.001571)+2 end annuli(2π(Ro²−Ri²)=0.000353)=0.003888m². Volume=π(Ro²−Ri²)L=4.418×10⁻⁶m³. Mass=8910×4.418×10⁻⁶=0.03936kg. Rate/kg=(0.39×0.003888)/0.03936=0.0385 mol/kg/min.
