G is the Gibbs free energy of a binary mixture, nT total moles, μi the chemical potential (μi≠0, μ1>μ2), xi mole fraction. The correct variation of G/nT with x1 at constant T,P is

  • Aa line from 0 (x1=0) to μ1 (x1=1)
  • Ba line from 0 (x1=0) to μ2 (x1=1)
  • a line from μ2 (x1=0) rising to μ1 (x1=1)
  • Da line from μ1 (x1=0) falling to μ2 (x1=1)

Explanation

By Euler's theorem, G/nT=x1μ1+x2μ2=μ2+x1(μ1−μ2) — a straight line starting at μ2 (x1=0) and rising to μ1 (x1=1) since μ1>μ2.
