Chemical Reaction Engineering
Ideal Reactor Design
GATE 2018
Medium
Reactant M converts to product N over a catalyst in a fixed bed reactor with a recycle stream R (flows F,G,H,P,R with M mole fractions xF,xG,xH,xP,xR as shown, fresh feed F/xF in, recycle R/xR rejoining before the reactor, product P/xP leaving after the split). The overall fractional conversion is
- A(xG·G−xH·H)/(xG·G)
- B(xG·G−xP·P)/(xG·G)
- C(xF·F−xH·H)/(xF·F)
- (xF·F−xP·P)/(xF·F)
Explanation
Overall conversion must be based on the fresh feed (F,xF) entering the process and the final product (P,xP) leaving it, not the internal recycle-loop streams.
