Mass Transfer
Mass Transfer Operations
GATE 2017
Hard
For steady-state gas-to-liquid mass transfer of solute A, if (xA,i−xA,L)/(yA,G−yA,i) is very close to zero, this implies mass transfer resistance is
- Anegligible in the gas phase only
- negligible in the liquid phase only
- Cnegligible in both phases
- Dconsiderable in both phases
Explanation
Flux equality NA=kx(xAi−xAL)=ky(yAG−yAi) gives (xAi−xAL)/(yAG−yAi)=ky/kx. This ratio →0 means ky<<kx, i.e. the liquid-side conductance is large (resistance 1/kx negligible) relative to the gas side.
