Fluid Mechanics
Bernoulli's Equation
GATE 2016
Medium
Water (1000 kg/m³) is pumped at 36 m³/h from a tank 2m below the pump to a vessel 10m above the pump. Suction pressure=120kPa, discharge pressure=240kPa, same pipe diameter throughout, g=10 m/s². Neglecting friction, the power (kW) required is
- A1.2
- 2.4
- C3.6
- D4.8
Explanation
Ws=(240000−120000)/1000+10×(10−(−2))=120+120=240 J/kg. Mass flow=1000×36/3600=10kg/s. Power=10×240=2400W=2.4kW.
