Mass Transfer
Mass Transfer Operations
GATE 2014
Medium
Packed towers are preferred for gas-liquid mass transfer operations with foaming liquids because
- Ain packed towers, high liquid to gas ratios are best handled
- Bin packed towers, continuous contact of gas and liquid takes place
- Cpacked towers are packed with random packings
- in packed towers, the gas is not bubbled through the liquid pool
Explanation
Foaming liquids form persistent foam when gas is bubbled through a pooled liquid (as in a tray/bubble-cap column). In a packed tower the liquid trickles as a film over the packing surface while gas flows through the voids, without being bubbled through a liquid pool — avoiding foam formation.
