GATE 2014
Easy

Steam economy of a multiple effect evaporator system is defined as

  • Akilogram of steam used per hour
  • Bkilogram of steam consumed in all the effects for each kilogram of steam fed
  • Ckilogram of steam used in all the effects for each kilogram of water vaporized per hour
  • kilogram of water vaporized from all the effects for each kilogram of steam fed to the first effect

Explanation

Steam economy = (total kg of water vaporized across ALL effects) / (kg of live/fresh steam fed to the FIRST effect). A well-designed N-effect evaporator train achieves steam economy approaching N, since the vapour from each effect is reused as the heating medium for the next.
